These days our favorite word around the Chartwell studio is moxie. It reminds me of an Icelandic word my friend Justin told me about — kaeruleysi — which doesn't translate directly in English, and refers to "someone who is spontaneous, who goes for things without thinking too much about the negative consequences." The more I talk to creative people who invent their own livelihoods, the more I need a simple word to describe what they do. So I've adopted moxie as shorthand, and apply it to everyone who creates things with their own enthusiasm and wackiness and fears, and shares them with the public. Now when I see someone working their tail off to sell their latest silkscreens or birdhouses, I can say, "nice moxie."
